The Purpose of the Program

The purpose of the program is to provide trained tutors to carry out a free, confidential, one-to-one, tutoring program for individuals over the age of 16 built on flexible scheduling, diagnostic and individualized teaching, and instructional materials that meet each student’s individual needs whether that means improvement in literacy and/or passing exams.

Mission of the Program

We support adults’ literacy goals through free, confidential, learner-centered tutoring.

What IS The Butte Literacy Program?

In Silver Bow County, about 3,400 adults do not have a high school diploma. The Butte Literacy Program is made up of community members who help area adults achieve their dreams of earning a high school diploma and open doors to greater opportunity through career/tech programs, college, or the military.

For 35 years, the Butte Literacy Program has worked almost invisibly on this mission. The Board of Directors, the Program Coordinator, and the volunteer tutors support all area adults’ educational goals through free, confidential, learner-centered tutoring. We provide trained tutors to carry out one-to-one, academic tutoring for individuals age 16 and older built on flexible scheduling, diagnostic and individualized teaching, and instructional materials that meet each student’s learning needs.  Earning their high school equivalency diploma will let these adult learners enter career/technical or college programs or the military.

Where In the World is the Butte Literacy Program?

The Butte Literacy Program has an office in the Butte-Silver Bow Public Library on the corner of West Broadway and Idaho Streets. All tutoring takes place there. The street address is 226 W. Broadway. Once you get to the library, to get to the office…

  • Take the elevator to second floor.
  • Turn left when you get off the elevator.
  • Walk past the reference desk to the back wall.
  • The office is on the right.

Cost of the Program

FREE. Students pay nothing.  The Butte Literacy Program pays for the tests and proctor fees and provides rides to and from testing because of the scarcity of parking on the tech campus where the HiSET tests are given.

Requirements

To enroll in the Butte Literacy Program, you must be at least 16 years old. Students must have a photo ID to be admitted to the HISET test site at Montana Tech.
